About MGM-IBT Laboratory

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science which encompasses areas viz. Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Virology, Plant and Animal tissue culture, Chemistry and Engineering. It is a fast emerging science with distinctive advantages as it finds applications in practically all aspects of life. The subject offers exciting opportunities in various fields from basic research to an industry oriented career. Our Biotechnology department has well equipped laboratories with latest equipments/instruments. The Department has a total seven laboratories viz. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Bioprocessing, Cell & Tissue culture and Computer Laboratories (with internet facility).These are equipped with: refrigerators, autoclaves, incubators (BOD), centrifuges, spectrophotometer, laminar air flows (horizontal and vertical), plant growth chambers etc. In addition to these, there are Research laboratories in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

THERMAL CYCLER

Thermal cyclers, also known as PCR machines or thermocyclers, are essential for any laboratory that relies on molecular biology. An indispensable tool for DNA amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Thermal cyclers are used in a range of disciplines. The majority of thermocyclers reside in research laboratories, where they are mainly used for amplifying DNA. In addition, researchers take advantage of thermal cyclers for cloning DNA and sequencing genes. Clinical facilities also house thermal cyclers for genetic tests that are used in diagnosing diseases.

Dry Bath Incubator provides a controlled dry heat environment for test tubes containing In Vitro diagnostic specimens or samples for a qualitative or quantitative analysis. Applications include: Incubating DNA specimens, Cross-matching and screens in blood banks, Enzyme assays, Digestions, Residue tests for milk.

Plant tissue culture is a collection of techniques used to maintain or grow plant cells, tissues or organs under sterile conditions on a nutrient culture medium of known composition. Plant tissue culture is widely used to produce clones of a plant in a method known as micropropagation.

FERMENTER

In the fermentation process, the growth of bacteria and production of drugs takes place under very tight conditions. The aeration rate, temperature and dosage of nutrients are regulated very closely during several stages of the process. Applications include: Production of biomass, Production of extracellular metabolites like ethanol, citric acid, amino acids, vitamins, polysaccharides, antibiotics, growth hormones, etc.

pH METER

A pH Meter is a scientific instrument that measures the hydrogen-ion concentration (or pH) in a solution, indicating its acidity or alkalinity. The pH meter measures the difference in electrical potential between a pH electrode and a reference electrode. It has a glass electrode plus a calomel reference electrode.

INCUBATOR SHAKER

Shaking incubators are often used for cell culturing, cell aeration, and solubility studies. In addition to stable temperature conditions, they use an orbital agitation at variable speeds to affect the growth of cell cultures. Applications include: Cell Cultures, Cell Aeration, Microbiology, Increasing Solubility Rates, Metabolism Studies, Bacterial Cultures, Bacteriology, Insect, Yeast and Plant cell culture in a controlled environment.

Laminar air flows can maintain a working area devoid of contaminants. Many medical and research laboratories require sterile working environments in order to carry out specialized work. Laminar Flow Cabinets can provide the solution.

CO2 INCUBATOR

CO2 incubators are widely used in scientific research to grow and maintain cell cultures. In a mammalian cell culture, carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is provided to mimic mammalian physiological pH. A critical part of the CO2 incubator is the monitoring and control of the carbon dioxide which functions to provide the optimal culture pH of 7.4 in concert with sodium bicarbonate or other buffer in the growth media.

INCUBATOR

In biology, an incubator is a device used to grow and maintain microbiological cultures or cell cultures. The incubator maintains optimal temperature, humidity and other conditions such as the carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen content of the atmosphere inside. Incubators are essential for a lot of experimental work in cell biology, microbiology and molecular biology and are used to culture both bacterial as well as eukaryotic cells.
